iTexas Realty Co. Blog: Why Would You Name It That?

Why Would You Name It That?

Often, while cruising the streets of San Antonio, I run across an unusual street name:

Dancing Bear (Somehow, I always think of it with an alternate spelling...)

Mustang Ranch (Where the working girls can be found?)

Dull Knife (As in, "My Boss lives on Dull Knife". Wouldn't that be so fun to say?)

I admit that I am easily entertained, but what possesses the people who name these streets?

I sometimes think that these people try to come up with names not being used elsewhere!

Funny!  I like the DANCING BARE  ;-)

I think the Dull Knife is a shortened street name.  Originally, it was "He's The Dullest Knife in the Drawer Avenue" which would work equally well for the boss!

We have a few interesting street names here in Alabama; Butter & Egg Rd, BoBo Section Rd, Bugger Hollow Rd. and my favorite "You take it Rd."  I'm not making this up.

Try doing a Google search for "strange street names" I think you're gonna be amused.

Hi All-

Thanks for further lightening my day by stopping by to add your amusing comments.  Where IS the responsible party?  It appears that they have not started searching the City offices yet in AL....

I think giving directions in your town would sound like a sitcom script, Take Dull Knife, to dancing bear and left to the Mustang Ranch...where you fin what you're looking for?!

I see some unusual street names from time to time as well. I don't know where they all come from, but someone has to think them up.

Streets around here are usually named by devlopers.  There's a couple of them who are very impressed with their children's names.  Lot's of Barbara and John Boulevards around here!

Gotta wonder!

Out here it's usually money that results in naming things, so the guy with all the money who is developing the subdivision names all the streets. I used to live on Valley Lights, which was in the midst of Angel's Point, Heavenly Way, Halo Circle, Divine Way, Gabriel Way, Our Place, and then streets named for all his family members: Katy Court, Matty Court, Marky Way, Conrad Drive, Edgar Place, and Bonnie Lynn Way.
